Baxter State Park - Sandy Stream Pond
Sandy Stream Pond is a small lake about a mile from Roaring Brook Campground. It seems to be the spot at which moose like to enjoy a bite and a drink. These large members of the deer family are used to being watched by humans and come quite close. The female moose shown (the one without the antlers) came almost within arms length.
Mt. Katahdin from Sandy Stream Pond. This picture was taken just as the sun set behind it. The part of the mountain shown is call "The Saddle." The Saddle rises toward the left, a rising which culminates in Baxter Peak (5,269 ft.), the highest point in Maine. It's a little hard to see, but there are actually two peaks on the left, one in front of the other. The front would be Pamola Peak (4,902 ft.), the rear Baxter Peak. The two peaks are connected by a thin slice of steep-sided rock, the Knife Edge.
After walking around the rock on which we sat, this female moose seemed finally to acknowledge our presence. She stood and stared at the froup of us on the rock for about ten minutes. She went on her way, satisfied, one might guess, that we were not going to start any trouble.
A close-up of Mrs. Moose. Calves can been seen on occasion at Sandy Stream Pond.
The large male moose stayed well away in the middle of the pond. He approached and left the pond from the shore opposite the one from which the females came.
