Baxter State Park - Mt. Katahdin
We got up at about 5:00 AM, packed up and had breakfast. After hiking along Roaring Brook from a short time, we began to climb. We realized pretty quickly that we were in for hard going, because the trail we had chosen, the Helon Taylor Trail, was very rugged. We puffed over a small hump and were presented with Mt. Katahdin itself. We began our climb.
View from Mt. Katahdin. Everything was rock and fog.
The bulk of Mt. Katahdin looms.
The trail descends to a gap between two peaks (a "col"), Pamola Peak and Chimney Peak. Here, climbers scramble up the sides of The Chimney on their way to Chimney Peak.
The blue blaze marking the way over, we prepare to descend from Pamola Peak and to climb The Chimney.
